There are many steps between when an idea for a transportation project is conceived and when people can actually use the new infrastructure.
Perhaps one of the most crucial milestones in this community is when the Virginia Department of Transportation opens proposals that have been sent in by companies who want to get paid to build or design things.
This morning, bids were opened for two dozen projects across the entire Commonwealth including a single-lane roundabout in Fluvanna County that was awarded funds through Smart Scale. The Caton Construction Group submitted the sole bid of $8,940,595 for the project which is beneath the $9.88 million budget allotted for construction.

The project will replace a current four-way intersection of U.S. Route 250 and Troy Road. The Smart Scale process came up with a score of 8.3 and this project ranked 77 out of 397 candidates submitted in the fourth round.
“This project will improve safety at the intersection by eliminating left-turn movements across traffic traveling at speed on U.S. 250,” reads the project website.” It will also eliminate the ‘blind spot’ for drivers turning from Route 631 created by right-turning vehicles on U.S. 250.”
The distance between the various steps can be lengthy. The design public hearing for this project was held on December 14, 2023. According to the project website, the estimated completion is expected in Winter 2027.
