Albemarle County’s recently approved economic development strategic plan puts a premium on building new space for companies in the life sciences and defense/intelligence sector. The plan specifically identifies one such location.
“Proximity to the University of Virginia and assets like North Fork Discovery Park give Albemarle a clear research and talent edge,” reads page 15 of the EDSP.
The North Fork Discovery Park is owned and operated by the University of Virginia Foundation and there are many spaces listed for development such as the 31-acre North Fork Site 8 which is classified by the Virginia Business Ready Sites program as a Tier 4.
The Foundation also owns several buildings such as Tower Center Four and this month the entity released a request for proposals for a construction management firm to fit out the second floor as well as parts of the first and third floors.
“The renovation will accommodate new tenant space for [Biological Safety Level 2] labs, support spaces, and offices for the UVA Health Micro & Molecular Core, Cytogenetics, and Genomics,” reads the request for proposals.
The first phase would be for design services and development of construction documents. A second phase for construction would be offered to the successful company but the Foundation would reserve the right to select a different company to do the construction.
Proposals are due on September 12 and a firm will be selected the following week. The RFP anticipates a contract being signed the week of September 22.
