Green Games initiative on the ground at UVA’s first home football game of 2025

Thousand of people will descend on Scott Stadium today for the 2025’s home University of Virginia football game. That means the use of many disposable food and drink containers many of which will end up in trash cans.

A dedicated team of students will be on hand to sort through the waste to see what can be recovered.

“A collaboration between the UVA Office for Sustainability and UVA Athletics, Green Games empowers fans to recycle and compost food, packaging, and other waste at clearly marked stations throughout the stadium,” reads an information release sent out on August 29. “. “Last season, 76 student volunteers supported 39 athletic events, helping divert 47 tons of waste from the landfill.”

That’s the equivalent of 18,600 football helmets according to the release.

“Green Games at Scott Stadium have consistently been one of our most popular volunteer opportunities. Students love making a hands-on impact on waste diversion goals while experiencing the excitement of a football game,” said Lela Garner, Sustainability Manager at UVA.

Crews will patrol trash cans and sort out that which can be recycled. This is all in service to the University of Virginia’s sustainability goal to reduce waste by 70 percent of 2010 levels.

“Most stadium vendors now offer recyclable and compostable packaging, and volunteers will be stationed throughout each concourse to assist fans with sorting their waste correctly,” the release continues.
