JMRL seeks young people to apply to be 2026 Teen Poet Laureate

The Jefferson-Madison Regional Library is seeking applications from people between the ages of 14 and 18 to serve as an ambassador for poetry in the community.

“The Teen Poet Laureate will have the opportunity to participate in public JMRL-related functions throughout the year May 2026 to April 2027,” reads an information release sent out on March 23.

In addition to making appearances at JMRL events, the person chosen may also be asked to write poems in JMRL publications.

“The current Teen Poet Laureate is Mazie Wiseman,” said Dylan Padilla, JMRL’s public communications specialist. “Their work has been included in a few JMRL newsletters, and they’ve been also been involved in a few other JMRL activities since her win in 2025, including Poem in Your Pocket Day, WordPlay, and hosting an open mic at Crozet Library,” said Dylan Padilla, JMRL’s public communications specialist.

Padilla said their latest poem will be included in a newsletter to be published this Friday.

“Keep an eye out!” Padilla said in an email.

Applications are due on April 1 by 11:59 p.m. and must include at least three poems, but no more than ten pages.

“Poems will be judged on content, craft, and voice,” reads the release. “An applicant’s maturity and leadership will also be considered.”

A letter from an adult sponsor must also accompany the application. A selection committee will consist of local authors and poets, teachers, and librarians. The winner will be announced on April 15.
