The grocery store chain Giant turned 90 on February 6, 2026 and the company marked the occasion locally this week with a philanthropic event.
The company handed over a $60,000 check to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank for their Family BackPack program which provides non-perishable foods through the school system.
“At the beginning of the school year, participating elementary schools enroll students who could benefit,” reads an information release sent out last week. “On a weekly basis, bags of food are delivered to the schools for each participating child and their families.”
The BackPack program serves an average of 3,800 children a month according to an impact report on the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank’s child nutrition efforts in 2025.
In Albemarle County, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank works with Grace Episcopal Church and MVMNT Church.
