Three candidates on the ballot for Greene County’s at-large Supervisor seat

Labor Day has traditionally marked the beginning of the political season and the November 3 general elections are now less than two months away. In Virginia, most of the focus is on Congressional races as well as three statewide Constitutional amendments.

There are a few special elections in the area around Charlottesville.

One of them is for the at-large seat on the Greene County Board of Supervisors. Francis McGuigan resigned in early January and the seat has been filled on an interim basis by former Supervisor Marie Durer.

Three candidates are on the ballot according to the Virginia Public Access Project. They are Jay Hunter, Alex Salle, and Jennifer Anne Ziros.

According to his campaign website, Hunter was appointed to the Board of Zoning Appeals and the Board of Equalization in 2025. He describes himself as an investigative journalist and moved to Greene County in 2021. Hunter said the person in the at-large position seat needs to represent the whole locality.

“Over the past year, that seat has been marked by instability and distraction, leaving residents without consistent, reliable representation at a time when our county faces real decisions about growth, infrastructure, schools, and public safety,” reads the campaign website.

Salle writes on his campaign website that he works in project management for local government.

“I’m responsible for overseeing public projects, managing taxpayer dollars responsibly, and working with engineers, contractors, consultants, and members of the community to solve real problems,” reads the campaign website.

Ziros also sits on the Board of Zoning Appeals and is a former member of the the Stanardsville Town Council. She is also the coordinator of the July 4 parade.

“As an independent, fiscally conservative moderate, I believe in examining the facts and data, and reaching a rational practical conclusion,” Ziros writes on her campaign website.

Other local elections:

• Over in the Shenandoah Valley, there is a vacancy for the Riverheads District on the Augusta County School Board to replace the late John Ward who died in July.
• There is also an open seat on the Louisa Town Council.
• There is an open seat on the Albemarle County School Board but that will be filled by the School Board this month. According to the School Board website, sixteen candidates have applied and interviews will be held on September 10. There will be a public hearing on September 17. More on this story in this newsletter as those times come nearer.
