Charlottesville Ten Miler seeks groups to receive proceeds from 2027 race

The very-first ever running of the Charlottesville Ten Miler in 1976 attracted 42 entrants on a course that took place at Camp Holiday Trails. The number of people who ran each year began to grow with 235 in 1978 and 390 in 1982.

In 1984, the race moved downtown as Charlottesville Police closed roads for the first time ever and by 1989 over a thousand people donned a bib.

A total of 2,245 people crossed the finish line this past year according to the website. Now the Charlottesville Track Club is planning for 2027’s race and is looking for the next set of groups to benefit from some of the race’s proceeds in exchange for arranging some of the labor.

“All profits after race expenses are paid will be granted to the selected beneficiaries based on their volunteer support during race week,” reads the website for the Charlottesville Ten Miler.

Applications are being accepted through August 5. Eligible groups must be non-profits that are local to the Charlottesville area including outlying counties.

“For the 2027 year, the race committee will heavily favor programs that provide health and wellness programs to our community,” the website continues.

There were eight beneficiaries in 2026 with the level of funding dependent on how many volunteers each can provide.

• Primary: Wartime Fitness, ​Soldiers of Hope, ​Charlottesville Community Bikes, ​Charlottesville Ballet
• Secondary: Miller School – Runner /Bike Parking Lot, Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, Abundant Life Ministries

Registration for the 2027 Charlottesville Ten Miler begins on August 30.
