Albemarle County records first pedestrian fatality on public roads in 2025, police continue to identify vehicle that drove away

A 40-year-old Albemarle County man has died after being struck by a vehicle Sunday evening and police continue to look for the driver that fled the scene.

Michael D. Venezian was hit by a vehicle while walking in the 900 block of Monacan Trail Road around 5:30 p.m. That’s otherwise known as U.S. 29 and the incident took place about half a mile from Interstate 64.

“Upon arrival, first responders located an adult male suffering from life-threatening injuries believed to be sustained from being struck by a vehicle,” reads an information release sent out on August 17. “The victim was transported to UVA Health and is currently in critical condition.”

Albemarle police announced that Venezian died in a release sent out on Monday. They’re asking anyone who was driving in the area around that time to inspect any dashcam footage for any possible evidence as there is no description of the vehicle other than it may have sustained damage.

“Anyone with information or who may have captured footage is asked to contact Officer Quillon at 434-296-5807,” the second release stated.

Public information officer Logan Bogert said that this is technically Albemarle’s first pedestrian fatality of the year because a pedestrian killed at Scottsville Center was on private property.
