Charlottesville City Council is scheduled to meet at 4 p.m. on Wednesday where the public will get more information on a low-barrier shelter to provide space for people to live and receive services.
While the agenda is not yet posted, the city sent out a release today with additional information about a presentation from the Low Barrier Shelter Working Group.
“The workgroup—comprised of community partners including PACEM, The Haven, and BRACH—will share recommendations and a conceptual path forward for consideration,” reads the release. “The session is designed to provide City Council with an opportunity to receive the presentation, ask questions, and discuss next steps.”
There will be no public comment at the session which will take place in CitySpace beginning at 4 p.m.
The topic of the low barrier shelter came up at the March 18 meeting of the Albemarle Board of Supervisors. Jack Jouett District Supervisor Sally Duncan attended a recent policy meeting put on by the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce where City Manager Sam Sanders provided an update.
“The one thing he just really requested is that people, you know, be patient and kind of allow the process to play out, allow the Holiday Drive project to kind of come to development and to, you know, financially support it,” Duncan said.
A clean-up of an encampment along the Rivanna Trail at Free Bridge is expected to begin on March 24. Last week Sanders stressed that the intent is not to remove people but to address safety and health concerns, as I reported.
