There are multiple providers of public transportation service in the area covered by the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission and that agency runs a service that seeks to help people navigate possible options.

“Partnership for Accessible Transportation Help, is a free transportation information and referral service open to the public,” reads a website run by the TJPDC. “PATH assists anyone with inquiries about local transportation, with a focus on helping older adults and people with disabilities find transportation options when they are unable to drive.”

The number is 888-879-7379 and you can find the email address on the website. In addition, staff hold workshops with the Charlottesville Area Alliance to help train people to know how to use public transportation routes.

Some of the costs to provide the service come from the Federal Transit Administration’s Section 5310 program which seeks to create “Enhanced Mobility of Seniors & Individuals with Disabilities.” The TJPDC is applying for another grant to continue operations and there is a public comment period for the next section of funding and people who want to provide feedback can do so through February 1 by mailing:

Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation – Public Transportation Division

600 E. Main Street

Suite 2120

Richmond, VA 23219

This information comes from a public notice published in the January 20, 2026 edition of the Charlottesville Daily Progress.

A trip to the website of the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation provides more information about how the Commonwealth administers the Section 5310 program. In fact, the DRPT is also taking input on a Community Human Service Mobility Plan which governs how the funding is administered. That is separate from the public notice for PATH funding.
