In one of their first actions of 2026, the Albemarle Board of Supervisors have promoted a veteran of Albemarle Fire and Rescue to serve as the new chief. David Puckett has been deputy chief of operations since 2012.
“David has over 27 years serving Albemarle county and its residents,” said County Executive Jeffrey Richardson. “And he has got progressive leadership experiences up through the ranks. Captain, battalion chief. He’s done a lot of fine work in Albemarle County Fire Rescue over the course of his career.”
Puckett succeeds Dan Eggleston who retired last October. He said he would have three priorities as fire chief.
“Strengthening our career and volunteer workforce, consistently delivering high quality services, and being responsible stewards for the resources you’ve entrusted to us,” Puckett said. “I have the utmost confidence in the men and women of our department.”
Puckett referred to a report given to the Board of Supervisors last fall outlining potential changes that are needed to accommodate a growing population. That report can be found in the agenda for the October 15, 2025 meeting and the public deserves a summary.
