Nelson County hires new Social Services Director

Nelson County has hired a new social services director several months after the Board of Supervisors took control of the department.

Elizabeth Grace Carter Deshong started work in the position on January 1. She has previous experience in Nelson County and recently worked as a supervisor in the Central Shenandoah Valley Office on Youth.

“Grace Deshong brings an exceptional combination of experience, integrity, and deep local knowledge,” said Candy McGarry, Nelson County Administrator, in an information release. “Her proven leadership and commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens make her uniquely qualified to lead the Department of Social Services during a period of growth and transformation for the County.”

The department had come under fire for failing to act on referrals of child abuse and neglect. Supervisors voted 3 to 1 in August to disband the Board of Social Services. McGarry became

Deshong said she is glad to return to Nelson County.

“This community has shaped my career, and I am deeply committed to supporting our staff and ensuring that individuals and families have access to the resources they need to thrive,” Deshong is quoted in the release.
