We’re still close enough to the glow of the Fiscal New Year for you to make your resolutions for civic participation. Perhaps this is the time to apply for a position on a board or a commission?
“We believe it is not only the right, but the responsibility of interested and capable community members to become engaged in local government policy by advising City Council on important local issues,” reads an information release sent out on July 15.

- There are two vacancies on the Charlottesville Affordable Housing Fund Committee and both of them are reserved for an “Affordable Housing Beneficiary”.
- There are two vacancies for the Board of Commissioners for the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority. One is to fill the seat formerly held by Javier Raudales whose term expired on June 30. The other is for a CRHA resident.
- There are three vacancies on the Community Development Block Grant and HOME Task Force. All three are for priority neighborhoods.
- There is one at-large seat open on the Charlottesville Housing Advisory Committee.
- There are three vacancies on the Historic Resources Committee.
- One of the city’s seats on the Jefferson Area Board for Aging Board of Directors is vacant.
- There is one seat expiring on August 31 on the Jefferson Area Community Criminal Justice Board.
- One of the city’s three seats on the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library (JMRL) Board expires on August 31.
- There is a vacancy on the Local Board of Building Code Appeals. This is for the “property manager” position.
- There is one vacancy on the Minority Business Commission.
- One of the city’s two seats on the Piedmont Family YMCA Board of Directors is currently open.
- Two seats on the Charlottesville Planning Commission expire on August 31. None of these seats are reserved.
- Four positions on the Police Civilian Oversight Board (PCOB) will open up on August 31.
- There are three reserved positions open on the Sister Cities Commission. These are for a representative from higher education, one from business, and a youth.
- There are two vacant seats on the Social Services Advisory Board.
- There are three vacancies on the Towing Advisory Board. Two are from representatives from the towing industry and one is for a citizen alternate.
- There is one open seat on the Tree Commission.
- There are two seats open on the three-member Vendor Appeals Board.
- There are multiple vacancies on the Youth Council.
