Albemarle County Police Department creates camera registry

The last decade has seen a proliferation of smart doorbells with cameras that are able to provide constant surveillance of our neighborhoods and communities. Companies like Ring and Nest are part of what is expected to be a $4.6 billion a year industry by 2030 according to one report.

Law enforcement agencies across the country have sought access to footage and now Albemarle County has launched a program to make it easier to do so. The police department is asking residents and businesses to participate in a camera registry program called NeighborLink.

“The program allows residents and businesses to let ACPD know they have exterior security cameras and are open to being contacted by police detectives if a crime occurs in their area,” reads an information release sent out on October 1. “Participation is completely voluntary, free of charge, and does not give ACPD direct access to any camera footage.”

According to the release, law enforcement would not have access to footage until someone gave consent in the course of an investigation.

“ACPD NeighborLink is a simple tool to let our detectives know where cameras are located when they’re investigating a crime,” said Deputy Chief of Police Camille Stewart. “By taking just a few minutes to complete the form, community members can help us save valuable time when solving crimes.”

Stewart oversees the ACPD’s Professional Standards and Criminal Investigations Division.
