Since 2017, a group called the Regional Transit Partnership has existed to serve as a clearinghouse and discussion forum for various providers of public transportation. One of the signature goals of the RTP was to set up a new government entity that both Albemarle and Charlottesville opted to join last year.
Now that the Charlottesville Albemarle Regional Transit Authority is up and running, that leaves the Regional Transit Partnership with less to do. At their meeting on October 23, the RTP will consider its own dissolution in the form of a letter to Albemarle and Charlottesville.
“Effective December 2025, CARTA will serve as the primary forum for regional transit discussion and decision-making and will continue working toward legislative pursuits to secure revenue-generating authority,” reads the unsigned letter in the packet.
There’s also a new memorandum of understanding intended to transfer some of the roles the RTP played over to CARTA. Under the arrangement, Albemarle and Charlottesville will each pay half of the cost of operating the agency to the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission.
The meeting will be held at 4 p.m. at 407 Water Street Center in Charlottesville. You can attempt to find the meeting material here. I don’t have a way of sending you directly to the agenda.
Two other highlights from the agenda:
- As of July 2025, about 800 University of Virginia employees had signed up for the Wahoo Commute program which seeks to encourage alternatives to driving to work.
- There will be an update from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation bus stops for statewide bus service
