For many decades, Mel’s Cafe on West Main Street served as a gathering spot and cultural institution for many in the city of Charlottesville. Vinegar Hill native Melvin Eugene Walker first opened the spot in 1984 after years working in food service.
Walker passed away on May 29, 2024. In his honor, the City of Charlottesville will commemorate his legacy on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at 3 p.m. with an honorary street naming for the block on which his former establishment still stands.
“There will be a community unveiling of Mel’s Walk,” said Charlottesville Mayor Juandiego Wade at City Council’s May 18 meeting. “It’s going to be right by the diner at the street there.”
Wade said Mel’s Walk will span from 7th Street NW and 8th Street NW. Wade will speak at the event as will Senator Creigh Deeds (D-11)
“He was just a staple in the community and working with the family members and the community to figure out the best way to acknowledge him and recognize him,” Wade said
The event is being coordinated by Alex Zan, one of the Charlottesville 12. James Bryant, a Community Award winner, will provide music.
