As snow and ice continues to fall across the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Virginia Department of Transportation is asking people to refrain from driving at this time.
“The cooperation of motorists staying off the roads during and following the storm is critical for crews to operate safely and efficiently,” reads a release sent out at 3:15 p.m.
VDOT crews have begun work to remove snow from roads even as it falls but the storm is expected to continue overnight and into the morning. There is a map where you can track the progress of snow plows in counties. The City of Charlottesville is responsible for its own roads.
Conditions prompted Charlottesville Area Transit to end service beginning at 3 p.m. today. A decision will be made about tomorrow’s service is in the morning.
Local governments across the Charlottesville area have closed their doors today as a winter storm prepares to cover the land.
Tonight’s scheduled meeting of the Albemarle Planning Commission was canceled per an email sent out at 9:10 email. The items will be deferred to the February 25, 2025 meeting except for one for the Crozet 4th of July Celebration. That will be heard on March 11.
Charlottesville canceled all meetings scheduled for today.
Greene County is also asking people to avoid all non-essential travel.
“Bridges will freeze quicker than roadways, so extra caution is recommended,” reads an emergency alert on the county’s website. “If you must travel, please drive slowly and allow extra time to arrive at your destination.”
The Greene County Board of Supervisors meeting scheduled for this afternoon has also been canceled. A joint work session with the Planning Commission will now be held on February 13 at 4:30 p.m. at the County Meeting Room at 40 Celt Road in Stanardsville. Public hearings that had been scheduled for tonight will be held on February 25, 2025.
