Would there be snow, or not? That has been a central question in the Charlottesville area as forecasts have been calling for a large storm bearing west from the center of the United States.
At one point, early models called for more than a foot of snow, but by Tuesday that had been reduced to a dusting. When the clouds actually rolled in, they dropped small particles of snow which easily stuck to roadways chilled by the overnight temperatures in Fahrenheit’s upper teens.
As the day began, local governments opened as usual. Greene County sent out a notice at 10:20 a.m.
“The snow forecast continues to change, and the snow totals have increased for parts of the County and began earlier making the roadways unsafe,” reads a press release. “As such, Greene County government offices are closing today at 10:30 a.m., including the landfill.”
That means that tonight’s meeting of the Planning Commission will be canceled.
By 12:03, Fluvanna County announced they would close for the day.
Charlottesville sent out a notice at 2:09 p.m. saying that all buildings and facilities would close at 5 p.m. That means the cancellation of the Board of Architectural Review tonight.
The Albemarle Board of Supervisors began their meeting at 1 p.m. in Lane Auditorium, but in an announcement that went out at 3:32 p.m., the county government announced they would close at 4 p.m.
“Due to current hazardous road conditions in our area, and freezing conditions that will continue through tonight, Albemarle County office buildings will delay opening until 10 am on Thursday, February 20, 2025,” reads the email.

At 3:03 p.m., Charlottesville local government announced Charlottesville Area Transit service would end at 6 p.m. this evening. Three hours earlier, CAT announced that MicroCAT service would immediately be suspended due to hazardous road conditions.
“For updates on service resumption, please check CatchtheCAT.org or follow us on social media,” reads that announcement.
Greene County has also closed the landfill for February 20 because of heavy snow in eastern Virginia where solid waste is hauled.
“This could be extended if our hauler is unable to transfer the trash to the location in Eastern Virginia,” the Greene release continues.
Louisa County also closed early today, including the landfill.
