A woman elected to represent all of Albemarle on the county’s School Board has resigned from the position effective at the end of the August 13 meeting.
“Serving on this Board has taken a significant toll on my physical, mental, and emotional health,” said Allison Spillman who will leave before the end of her first term.
Spillman defeated Meg Bryce with 62.4 percent of the vote in November 2023. According to media reports, she drew the ire of a conservative advocacy group over a social media post comparing them to the Ku Klux Clan.
In recent weeks, the Albemarle County Republican Committee has been demanding investigations into school policies after a string of sexual abuse cases and has called for resignations. Superintendent Matt Haas resigned effective June 20 after eight years in the position.

Spillman said she had intended to resign at the end of the last academic year but had planned to stay on to assist with finding a new superintendent.
“The personal cost has become untenable,” Spillman said. “My children deserve to have me fully present in their lives, and they should not have to endure hatred, harassment, or criticism because their mother serves in public office.”
Dr. Chandra Hayes has been appointed as the acting superintendent. She has been the assistant superintendent of instruction.
