Emerson Automated Services to close Albemarle operations and lay off 139 employees

A company that manufactures equipment and produces software to help automation of various types of systems will close its facility on Austin Drive in Albemarle County by the end of the year putting 139 people out of work.

“After a great deal of consideration, Emerson Automation Solutions known as Intelligent Platforms, LLC, has made the decision to permanently close operations at the Charlottesville, VA facility,” wrote Justin Johnson, Human Resources Director for the company in a July 9 letter sent to two recipients.

One of them is Malissa Short of the Virginia Employment Commission which runs a Rapid Response program under the Virginia Workforce Network. This is part of the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act which seeks to help employees quickly find other work. Learn more here or take a look at the federal code.

The second person is somehow Charlottesville Mayor Juandiego Wade despite the company being in Albemarle County.

Johnson said the layoffs will take place in waves. The company laid off 87 people last year as I reported at the time. All of the works have been notified.

“We hope you understand that this action is being taken strictly due to business economics,” Johnson said. “The company has designed a severance plan based on each employee’s length of service.”
