Charlottesville wins Bike Month Challenge

Bike month has now rolled away and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation has tallied up the results of a friendly competition.

“Several cities were pitted against each other to see who could log more bike rides,” said City Councilor Natalie Oschrin. “I’m pleased to announce that the City of Charlottesville has won that challenge beating Richmond, Roanoke, and Virginia Beach.”

Rides taken as part of a commute to work were to be recorded at a website called ConnectingVa.com. Charlottesville cyclists logged 856 rides compared to 712 in Richmond. The other communities that participated were the City of Newport and the Town of Culpeper.

Oschrin encouraged people who have been logging their rides to continue doing so.

In an update, the DRPT stated its wants to see more communities participate in 2027.

“DRPT completed its May is Bike Month promotion with 4,809 bike trips recorded in the ConnectingVa app, which equates to more than 1 million calories burned, more than 1,000 gallons of gas saved, more than 25,000 miles not driven, and participants saved at a total of $18,629 by biking and not driving,” reads the update from the state agency.
