Encyclopedia Virginia publishes new e-book in advance of America 250

2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, a time for Americans and people across the globe to reflect on the idea of self-governance.

To fuel those thoughts, Encyclopedia Virginia has created a new e-book that traces the origins of the American Revolution in Virginia. They’ve consolidated several entries into one compendium called The Early Revolution in Virginia for review and discussion.

Encyclopedia Virginia is an initiative of Virginia Humanities.

“We’re excited to offer this resource from some of the nation’s leading historians that tells the compelling story of the early Revolution in Virginia, focusing on events and actors both well-known and not so famous,” said Patti Miller, managing editor of Encyclopedia Virginia.

Miller suggests the book as a companion to the PBS documentary series produced by Ken Burns called the ‘The American Revolution.’ Burns was the speaker at this years’ swearing-in ceremony for new American citizens at Monticello as I reported at the time.

Need to brush up on the Seven Years War in Virginia? What did Lord Dunmore proclaim? Why did colonial resistance grow? These and other topics are accompanied by illustrations and maps to provide context.

The new e-book is available now for free download. Click here!
