Laufer and Callsen cruise to re-election to second terms

Virginia went through a legislative redistricting earlier this decade thanks to a Constitutional amendment that required boundaries to be determined by a bi-partisan redistricting commission. When that group could not find consensus, the Virginia Supreme Court assigned two special masters to redraw maps based more on geography than previous maps.

That had the effect of making it more difficult for some incumbents to win with new boundaries intended to avoid partisan gerrymandering. The new political math caused some longtime legislators to retire such as former Delegate Rob Bell.

Albemarle County and Charlottesville’s representation in the House of Delegates is now made by whoever is elected to House District 54 and House District 55.

Democrat Katrina Callsen won election to House District 54 in 2023 in an uncontested race. She did so again in 2025. The district covers all of Charlottesville and some of the urban ring to the north along the U.S. 29 corridor.

“I am humbled to be re-elected as your Delegate,” said at a watch party at Random Row Brewing. “We not only met our goals, we sent waves across the country, and delivered a loud and clear message directly to Trump that enough is enough—Virginia is not afraid.”

Democrat Amy Laufer won election to House District 55 in 2023 in a race against Republican Steve Harvey. She won 61.38 percent of the vote. This district covers the rest of Albemarle County and portions of Nelson County and Louisa County. Also, 21 registered voters in Fluvanna County.

This time around Laufer did not have an opponent.

“We are ready to continue delivering strong leadership for our community,” Laufer said in a post on her campaign’s Facebook website.
