Crickenberger to step down as Albemarle’s parks and recreation director

Bob Crickenberger began working for Albemarle County as a groundskeeper over half a century ago, serving the last fifteen years as director of the Department of Parks and Recreation.

He’ll retire from county government on December 31 according to an information release sent out on October 14.

“My career with Albemarle County has been defined by a shared passion for parks, recreation, and community,” said Crickenberger. “It has been an honor to work alongside such dedicated staff, volunteers, and partners to develop open spaces that bring people together in green and beautiful places.”

Since becoming director, Crickenberger has presided over an expanding parks system with the creation of Biscuit Run Park, the acquisition of lands for future parks such as ones at Hedgerow and Arrowhead Valley, and the conversion of Free Bridge Lane to a pedestrian promenade.

“Bob’s commitment to public service and his vision for creating meaningful recreational spaces have shaped how our community connects with the natural beauty of our county,” the information release quotes Albemarle County Executive Jeff Richardson. “His leadership leaves an enduring legacy, not only for the residents who enjoy our parks, but also for the countless employees who have worked alongside him over the past five decades.”

The process to recruit a successor will begin shortly.
