Missel outraises Smith in Albemarle’s only contested Supervisor race

There are three Supervisors seats on the ballot this year in Albemarle County but only one of them is contested.

Democrat Fred Missel and Republican Scott Smith are on the ballot to succeed Jim Andrews as the representative from the Samuel Miller District.

Missel is chair of the Albemarle Planning Commission and vice president for development at the University of Virginia Foundation. He announced his campaign in February.

Smith retired from a career in software sales and moved to Albemarle with his wife in 2020. He launched his bid in May.

Campaign finance reports for the period between July 1 and August 31 were due on September 15 and the Virginia Public Access Project has made the data available.

Missel’s campaign started the period with $16,670 in the bank and raised $26,404 in the two months. In Virginia, campaign contributions above $100 must have identifiable donors and Missel raised $24,550 in this category.

That includes a $5,000 donation from Sonjia Smith and a $5,000 donation from the Realtors Political Action Committee of Virginia. There’s an additional $2,500 from the Morrill Family Investment and $2,500 from K Holdings Inc. The whole list can be seen here.

Smith began July with $8,490 on hand and raised $8,410 in the period. That includes $8,247 above $100 with $2,000 of that from Thomas Thorpe, the CEO of Afton Scientific.

Democrat Sally Duncan is the only candidate to succeed Diantha McKeel in the Jack Jouett District. She began July with $2,399 in the bank and raised $25 in the two months. The campaign spent no money.

Rio District Supervisor Ned Gallaway is uncontested for the third election in a row. The Democrat began the reporting period with $9,495 and neither raised nor spent any money.
