After just over a month in office, Former Delegate Todd Gilbert has resigned from his position as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia. That’s according to an article in Virginia Scope by Brandon Jarvis

That means that Robert Tracci, a former Commonwealth’s Attorney for Albemarle County, will step into the role on an acting basis. He served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice in the first administration of President Donald Trump.

Tracci was elected to be Albemarle’s top prosecutor in 2015 when he narrowly defeated incumbent Denise Lunsford with 51.26 percent of the vote. In 2019, Democrat Jim D. Hingeley defeated Tracci and he went on to serve in the federal government.

In April, Virginia Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner nominated both Gilbert and Tracci for the role and President Trump picked Gilbert. Gilbert resigned from the U.S. House of Delegates for what he told Virginia Scope in April was a “once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Gilbert had served in the 33rd House District but withdrew paperwork to run for another term. The seat is currently vacant and will be filled in the November election. Republican Justin L. Pence faces Democrat Andrew Payton
