The possibility of snow in Charlottesville has led Charlottesville City Manager Sam Sanders to set the city’s dial to “Level 1 Snow Operations” to prepare. This also involves the activation of “Emergency Snow Routes” across the city.
“All vehicles should be removed from these areas by 1:00pm February 11th and will be subject to towing if still present after 1:00 p.m.,” reads an announcement sent out this afternoon at 1:43 p.m.
The activation has been made because Department of Public Works are preparing for up to seven inches of snow.
Those designated routes are:
Designated Emergency Snow Routes include:
- Market Street (Old Preston Avenue to 9th Street NE)
- High Street (Preston Avenue to 9th Street NE)
- Water Street (Ridge Street to 10th Street NE)
- 2nd Street W (Market Steet to Water Street)
- 4th Street E (Market Street to Water Street)
- West Main Street (Ridge Street to JPA)
- University Avenue (JPA to Rugby Road)
“Designation of these Emergency Snow Routes increases the ease and safety of snow removal operations by removing vehicular and parking obstructions, allowing City plow operators to more effectively and efficiently clear these streets for travel,” the release continues.
The city is offering free parking at the Market Street and Water Street Parking Garages in order to provide a place for people to store their vehicle in the meantime.
Governor Glenn Youngkin has declared a state of emergency in advance of the snow. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the area between 10 a.m. Tuesday and early Wednesday morning. For more on that aspect of the story, take a look at the previous story from today.
Before you go: This is another example of a story being posted to Information Charlottesville first. It may or may not be in the next newsletter, but I felt the information was worth getting out quickly. The goal of Town Crier Productions is to provide information to people in an age when legacy media outlets are perhaps not doing enough.
