Albemarle County Public Schools has published a public notice in the Charlottesville Daily Progress to comply with a federal law that requires schools to identify where “asbestos containing building materials” are known to still exist.
“Historically, asbestos was used in building materials because of its insulation and fire resistance capabilities,” reads the notice in the August 1, 2026 edition of the newspaper. “Intact and undisturbed asbestos materials are generally not hazardous. Asbestos materials can become hazardous when, due to damage, fibers are released.”
That can lead to cancer and asbestosis if those particles are inhaled.
Albemarle County Public Schools conduct inspections three times a year to determine if any of the known locations listed in a management plan have been disturbed. According to the notice, the last inspection found everything in good condition.
The notice lists all of the buildings that are known not to contain asbestos because they were constructed after its use was discontinued or they have been removed. They are:
- Agnor Elementary
- ACE Academy at Lambs Lane
- ACE Academy at Seminole Place
- Baker-Butler Elementary
- Crozet Elementary
- Trailhead Learning Community
- Ivy Elementary
- Monticello High
- Mountain View Primary
- Mountain View Lower
- Lakeside Middle School.
