All localities all across Virginia now have the ability to ask their voters if they would approve a one-percent sales tax to put the proceeds toward school construction. Fluvanna County Supervisors have begun the process of asking the Circuit Court for permission to put the question on the ballot.
The Louisa County Board of Supervisors was expected to take up a similar resolution on Monday but pulled the item from the agenda.
“I’d like to strike number five from the new business action items,” said Toni Williams, Supervisor for the Jackson District at the beginning of the meeting.
No reason was given at the time. One member of the public thanked the Board for removing the item.
“Considering all of the potential tax revenue that may be coming in, the county doesn’t need another avenue to stick our hands down the pocket of the citizens,” said Chris Lyles of the Mineral District.
If Louisa Supervisors want to move forward with a referendum this year, they have until August 14 to get an order from the Circuit Court.
Chair Duane Adams of the Mineral District told this newsletter in an email this is “due to the General Assembly creating such a tight timeline to get the measure on the ballot an action of this importance shouldn’t be rushed.”
