The regional government organization that handles trash, debris and other waste in Albemarle and Charlottesville is removing an option for payment at one of its facilities.
Beginning on February 2, 2026, the Ivy Solid Waste and Recycling Center at 4576 Dick Woods Road will stop accepting cash.
“This cashless initiative is being implemented to streamline payment processing, reduce wait times, and improve overall efficiency at the facility,” reads an information release sent out by the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority on January 10.
Signage went up in September to warn people of the move. People will still be able to pay by check as well as debit and credit cards.
“The Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center accepts municipal solid waste from community residents, businesses, and collection vehicles servicing Charlottesville & Albemarle County,” the release continues. “Accepted materials include household refuse, construction and demolition debris, bagged trash (Tag-a-Bag), grindable vegetative materials, clean fill, tires, appliances, and large bulk items.”

The RSWA is one of two authorities that are funded and governed by Albemarle County and Charlottesville. The FY2026 budget is $10.5 million and can be reviewed here.
