VDOT has held public hearing for bridge replacement in Western Albemarle

There are many steps along the way from a transportation project going from an idea to something actually constructed.

On December 10, the Virginia Department of Transportation held a design public hearing for a replacement of a bridge that carries Route 824 across Stockton Creek in western Albemarle County.

Route 824 is a secondary road also known as Patterson Mill Lane.

“The existing bridge is in poor condition due to its supports,” reads a VDOT website for the replacement. “The project will permanently remove the existing pier from the stream and replace the abutment supports on a state-maintained roadway.”

One person attended the meeting according to Alexis Mehretab, VDOT’s communications manager for the Culpeper District.

The existing bridge was constructed in 1932 and is made of a steel beam and a timber deck. The new span will be made of precast concrete deck with an asphalt surface. There will be two travel lanes and three-beam guardrails on each side.

There is currently a weight limit of three tons on the bridge and that will be lifted when construction is complete in 2029.

The last official traffic count on Patterson Mill Lane was conducted in 2018 and recorded a daily usage of 161 vehicles a day.
