As Albemarle County seeks a new fire chief, there is at least one internal candidate who will likely not apply.

John Oprandy, the county’s former deputy chief of emergency management, has taken on a new role for the City of Charlottesville.

City Manager Sam Sanders announced on September 2 that Oprandy will serve as the city’s emergency management coordinator.

“This is my first day of my second tour with the city,” Oprandy said. “I was with the city fire department many years ago. I started in 1992 there and then went to the county.”

In his new role, Oprandy will be coordinating with neighborhoods on emergency preparedness.

For more on the department, take a look at the city’s website.

In August, Albemarle Fire and Rescue Chief Dan Eggleston announced his retirement effective sometime in October.
