UVA wins two awards from group promoting sustainable travel

The University of Virginia is one of the biggest drivers of tourism in the area both for the operations of the school itself as well as its sporting and entertainment events.

UVA also has ambitious goals to reduce pollution including solid waste. According to the UVA Sustainability page, there is a goal to reduce the amount of trash and other waste generated to 30 percent of 2010 levels by 2030.

Recent efforts have been recognized by an organization called the Virginia Green Travel Alliance.

“Through the Travel Star Awards, we get to recognize the ‘greenest’ businesses and individuals that have demonstrated outstanding effort and achievements in the past year,” said Tom Griffin, the group’s executive director, in an information release.

UVA won two awards, with the first being for a project called Green Games at Scott Stadium and the second being a Green Team All-Star Award for Lela Garner at UVA Sustainability.

“Last season, with Lela’s leadership and volunteer corps of 67 students we were able to recycle 16,570 lb of food waste & packaging and 76,182 lbs of recyclables,” reads an information release sent out by UVA Sustainability.
