Another conversion of a signalized traffic light to a roundabout will get under construction this week in Albemarle County. This time the location is the intersection of two Virginia highways southeast of Downtown Charlottesville.
“This project will convert the existing signalized intersection at Route 20 and Route 53 to a hybrid multi-lane roundabout,” reads the project description on the Virginia Department of Transportation’s website. “The three-leg roundabout will use channelization for right-turning traffic from Route 53 to Route 20 and includes a shared-use path along Route 20.”
This project began as a Smart Scale application awarded funds in the 2022 cycle. Smart Scale is a competitive process where localities and regional planning organizations submit candidates that are scored on a variety of metrics. (read the application)
The new configuration of Scottsville Road and the Thomas Jefferson Parkway is one of five projects that were bundled into one contract in order to attract bidders.
The $42.3 million “Albemarle Intersection Design-Build Bundle #2” includes the new roundabout east of Crozet on U.S. 250 as well as roundabouts under construction on Old Lynchburg Road and the John Warner Parkway.
