UVA Provost: Record number of applications for Class of 2030

The Academic and Student Life Committee of the University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors learned on June 4, 2026 that demand is up for a UVA education.

“We had record numbers of applications for the Undergraduate class of 2030, more than 82,000 applications in all,“ said Brie Gertler, interim executive vice president and provost at UVA.

In March, UVA announced they had offered admission to 10,287 first-year students. Not even close to that number will attend. A total of 10,086 offers went out for the class of 2029 and 3,986 enrolled according to the UVA Office of Undergraduate Admission.

Gertler said UVA is also facing the same issues other universities are having with graduate enrollment with a federal government determined to make it difficult for people from other many countries to study here. Policies continue to shift against legal immigration.

“The government has signaled an intention to change what’s known known as the Duration of Status rule,” Gertler said. “And with the change that they’re proposing, this would mean that international students could remain in the country for no more than the duration of their graduate program or four years, whichever is shorter.”

Gertler said this will reduce the number of PhD candidates as earning a degree often takes more than four years.

While over 8,000 received degrees at UVA in May, Gertler wanted to shine attention on the first set of graduates to go through the Public Services Pathways program established in 2022 in collaboration.

“Choosing from one of seven pathways including diplomacy and security, public health, education and others, 91 fourth year students completed one of these pathways,” Gertler said. “When you complete a pathway on your transcript, you get a designation that notes that you completed the pathway.”

A version of the program for graduate students will begin this fall.

Gertler also told the committee that the search continues for a new Dean of the Darden Graduate School of Business. Scott Beardsley, the former holder of that position, is now UVA President.

There is also a search under way for the Dean of the School of Architecture as Malo Hutson wanted to return strictly to teaching. There are also searches underway for the Dean of the School of Medicine and the School of Data Science after the death of Phil Bourne earlier this year.
