New east-west bus service to launch April 20

An intercity bus service linking the Shenandoah Valley to the Atlantic Ocean will begin on April 20 and tickets are now on sale.

The Tidewater Current will travel each day from Harrisonburg to Virginia Beach, a journey that will take about six and a half hours each way. The service will be the fifth offered by the Virginia Department of Transportation under the Virginia Breeze banner.

“The Tidewater Current creates an important east-west connection across the Commonwealth, helping people travel safely, affordably, and conveniently while supporting tourism and economic opportunity,” said Mariia Zimmerman, Director of the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, in an information release.

The following are some of the steps:

  • Virginia Beach Convention Center
  • Norfolk – Military Highway Park & Ride
  • Newport News – Newport News Transportation Center
  • Williamsburg – Williamsburg Transportation Center
  • New Kent – Colonial Downs / Rosie’s Gaming Emporium
  • Richmond International Airport
  • Richmond Main Street Station
  • Charlottesville – Scott Stadium
  • Staunton – Crossing Way Park & Ride
  • Harrisonburg – Godwin Transit Center

According to the schedule, a one-way ride from Charlottesville to Virginia Beach will take just over five hours and will arrive at 1:25 p.m. The fare would be $29.

The other four services are:

  • The Valley Flyer travels between Blacksburg and Union Station in the District of Columbia.
  • The Capital Connector goes between Martinsville and Union Station
  • The Piedmont Express takes passengers between Danville and Union Station
  • The Highland Rhythm provides a ride from Bristol to Union Station

According to the release, the Virginia Breeze over 68,000 passengers in 2025, a five percent increase over 2024.

The underlying service is provided by MegaBus.
