On Thursday one of the projects in what the Virginia Department of Transportation calls “Intersection Design-Build Bundle 2” will open to traffic on U.S. 250 east of Crozet.
A three-way roundabout will now regulate flow of vehicles between U.S. 250, Virginia Route 240 and Browns Gap Turnpike.
“The project replaces the previous intersection with a single-lane roundabout designed to improve safety and traffic flow in the Crozet area,” reads an information release sent out on March 9.
While the roundabout will begin operations this week, VDOT cautions that work is not yet complete and some construction activity will still be underway.
The project is one of five in a bundle that has a cost of $42.3 million. In recent years, VDOT has taken to an approach where contractors are asked to bid on a suite of projects rather than individual ones. The idea is that one construction firm can bring down overall costs.
The other four are a roundabout at John Warner Parkway and Rio Road East, a reconfiguration of the intersection of Rio Road East and Belvedere Boulevard, a roundabout at the intersection of Virginia Routes 20 and 53, and a roundabout at 5th Street and Old Lynchburg Road. For more information, consult VDOT’s page on the topic.
