Fluvanna County holding special election for Commissioner of Revenue this November

In addition to regularly scheduled elections this year, voters in Fluvanna County will choose a new Commissioner of the Revenue this November.

Andrew W. Sheridan has announced his retirement effective at the end of the year.

“Since this is an elected position, the seat will be filled through a Special Election on November 4, 2025,” said Fluvanna County Registrar Joyce Wells Pace in an email announcing the vacancy. “Candidates must submit all required forms no later than 5:00 p.m. on August 15, 2025.”

So far two people have qualified for the ballot. They are Lauren Ryalls Sheridan and Donald L. Reynard.

Lauren Sheridan has worked for Fluvanna County government for 14 years with a dozen of those in the Commissioner of Revenue’s office.

“As a dedicated, experienced professional, I have the appropriate experience to ‘hit the ground running’ once elected,” Lauren Sheridan said on the Facebook page for her campaign.

Reynard is a member of the Fluvanna County Board of Zoning Appeals. The Fluvanna Review reported in June that he is a critic of land use taxation.

According to the records of the Virginia Department of elections, Andrew Sheridan has been Fluvanna County’s Commissioner of Revenue since 2003 when he defeated three other candidates. At that time he was a member of he Board of Supervisors representing the Columbia District. Sheridan had contested elections in both 2007 and 2011 but was unopposed in 2015, 2019 and 2023.

There are three seats up for election on the Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors and incumbents are the only candidates in each district.

Independent John Michael Sheridan is running for an additional term to represent the Columbia District. He was first elected in 2013 when he defeated a fellow incumbent with 57.1 percent of the 1,263 votes cast. He was unopposed in 2017 and 2021.

Republican Chris Fairchild is on the ballot for a second term to represent the Cunningham District. He was unopposed in 2021.

Democrat Tony O’Brien is seeking a fourth term as the Rivanna District Supervisor. He was first elected in 2013 when he ran as an independent and received 58 percent of the 1,982 votes cast. In 2017, O’Brien defeated a Republican challenger with 59.8 percent of the 2,157 votes cast.

For the Fluvanna County School Board, both the Columbia and Rivanna District seats are uncontested with Sean P. Brennan and Andre O’Brian Key on the ballot respectively. The Columbia seat has been held by Andrew Riley Pullen since 2017.

Gequetta Givens Murray-Key was elected to the Rivanna seat in 2021 but died in October 2022. Andre Key, her husband, won election to the seat in a special selection in 2023.

Sarah Johnson and Charles D. Rittenhouse are both vying for the Cunningham District seat. Rittenhouse has held the seat since 2012 when he won with 52 percent of the vote. He faced opposition in 2013 and 2021 but the race was uncontested in 2017.
