JABA is offering assistance with Medicare enrollment

Fall is a time to stock of many things about our lives including how we receive our medical care.

Medicare benefits are open to people over the age of 65. The open enrollment period for Medicare in Virginia began on October 15 and runs through December 7.

To help people navigate, the Jefferson Area Board on Aging (JABA) is offering free counseling and encouraging all Medicare beneficiaries to schedule a free appointment with the Insurance Counseling Program to fully understand Medicare options and ensure they’re on the best plan.

“Last year, we helped nearly 3,000 people review their Medicare coverage,” said Randy Rodgers, Insurance Counseling Program Manage with JABA. “About half of them needed to make changes to get the best coverage at the lowest cost. That’s why it’s so important to review your plan. Don’t assume it will stay the same.”

In the American system of health care, Medicare plans change each year with new prices for everything including premiums, deductibles, and drug coverage.

JABA’s counseling program is paid for though the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) and the state Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP).
