Agenda published for UVA Board of Visitors meeting with no presidential search update listed

To truly understand and know the future of Albemarle County and Charlottesville, you have to know what’s happening at the University of Virginia. The Board of Visitors is meeting this week and an agenda has now been posted. (read the materials)

One item missing from the agenda for the two and a half day meeting is a gathering of the special committee to select a new president. Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger has asked for that process to be paused until she is sworn in on January 17.

Interim President Paul Mahoney will provide an account of the agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice that closed two pending investigations and suspended five others. That will take place at the full Board meeting scheduled for Friday, December 5, at 1:45 p.m.

Space in the Rotunda Board Room is extremely spare and members of the public are invited to watch the meetings online. These are streamed live but not publicly archived by UVA.

The meeting began Wednesday with a tour of the Fontaine Energy Plan and the Fontaine Research park. Then there a holiday gathering was scheduled.

All meetings on December 4 take place at the Boar’s Head Resort. The Health System Board meets in the morning and the first BOV panel is scheduled to convene at 1:15 p.m. when the Advancement Committee meets. That’s a fancy word for fundraising. This will feature a report from the Senior Vice President for External Relations Mark Luellen. (agenda) (presentation)

Next up is the Academic and Student Life Committee which will take action on two professorships, two new degree programs, and the discontinuation of two others. (agenda) (presentation)

The Buildings and Grounds Committee will take up the addition of an item to the Major Capital Plan. This is the renovation of a building at the School of Medicine damaged earlier this year estimated to cost between $25 million and $30 million. (agenda) (presentation)

“In April 2025, the Steele Wing of the School of Medicine’s West Complex suffered significant damage due to flooding,” reads the staff report. “The proposed capital project will renovate the

three-story wing, which served as the sole location for two clinical departments and a division in pediatrics.”

They’ll also learn more about how the major capital planning process works and get an update on how historic preservation is conducted.

Friday, December 5, begins with the Finance Committee, also at the Boar’s Head Resort. (agenda) (presentation)

The second panel to meet will be the Audit, Compliance, and Risk Committee. This panel will go into closed session at the end. (agenda) (presentation)

The final meeting of the morning is about UVA’s College at Wise. (agenda)

And then the full board meeting as stated above.

The Board of Visitors is down to 12 members. The Virginia Senate failed to confirm five appointments made by Governor Glenn Youngkin.
