North Construction awarded contract to reconfigure three intersections

When transportation projects are in development, engineers come up with an estimate for what the work will cost. However, the exact numbers are not known until a government agency puts the project out for bid.

For instance, the City of Charlottesville put a request this past spring for contractors to bid on a project to reconfigure the intersection of Monticello Avenue and 2nd Street SE. The Virginia Department of Transportation calculated a cost estimate of $1.4 million but the only bid from Curtis Contracting was over budget.

When the city tried again, a decision was made to bundle this project with two others in an attempt to attract more responses. This includes changes to the intersections of 10th Street and Grady Avenue as well as Preston Avenue and Harris Street.

Three contractors submitted bids with North Construction of Auburn, Virginia, having the lowest at $2,056,574.45. S.L. Williamson said they could do the work for $3,461,152 and Curtis Contracting submitted one for $4,272,517.03.

North Construction was awarded the contact on November 26.

Meanwhile Albemarle County is seeking contractors to bid on a project to build sidewalk improvements on Commonwealth Drive and Dominion Drive.

“The project is generally described as approximately 3,278 linear feet of sidewalk, curb & gutter, storm drainage, concrete and asphalt paving and associated sitework,” reads the county’s solicitation page.

This project is funded through the Virginia Department of Transportation’s revenue-sharing program with Albemarle County picking up half of the cost. The current estimate is $3.8 million according to VDOT’s Six Year Improvement Program dashboard.

Bids are due on December 4.
